Katharine McGuinness

” A monotype is really a painting done by the artist, in my case with lithography inks, onto a printing plate. This painting is then transferred onto 100% rag paper through an etching press.  I work on a drawing composition first, then use that composition as a basis for creating a series of works repeating or changing colors and design elements as I go. Some images may be similar to each other, but each is painted on to the plate freeform by my own hand, with ever changing color and technique. There is no edition, therefore each piece is unique.”

Quotes from the press

Monotype on Paper   2007

“Kate McGuinness passionately loves her work and the process involved. She is truly one of the most openly passionate artists I have met in a long time. When asked why she chose printmaking over painting, she quickly responded ‘I love ink, I always have.’ McGuinness’ provocative compositions represent pure spontaneity. Her art is dazzling.”                             Sandra Phillips, LODO NEWS

“The colors and figures created by Katharine are driven by music. French rap, techno, opera, and more ripple their way through the studio as she composes her own art. The colors she mixes seem more than willing to perform for her.”
                                                                               Ron O’Hare, IMAGE Magazine

“Her latest works create an intoxicating landscape comparable to the works of Rothko.”                              Matthew Gustafson, COLORADO HOMES Magazine
